In the kitchens of the great breeders: at Chevotel, Sea the Stars crosses and males for the 2022 season

Breed / 09.02.2022

Like great chefs, they have the secrets to developing tomorrow’s champions… Galloping Day offers you an immersion in the kitchens of the flat and barricaded main breeders, who were kind enough to reveal their breeding plans for the 2022 season. Today, we have an interview. made an appointment with Hugo Namur, the manager of the Chevotel bull farm.

By Adrien Cugnasse

Over the past decade, Chevotel’s herd has been able to count from one to seven births annually. And in 2021, this breeding has 3 black horses and 26 successful French horses. That’s a 17.21% win-per-match rate for France. This is one of the four highest success rates of last season in our country (among 15 or more Purebred starters).

Gallop day. – Karsabruni has a specific profile. What is his story?

Hugo Namur. – She is the daughter of a domestic horse Speedmaster (Monsun), a good racehorse, covered a few mares, but still gave us three types of black.

At university, Karsabruni also had some ups and downs. But with Le Havre (Noverre), it works great. She gave Karlarina (Le Havre), winner of the Prix Denisy (L) and the Prix de la Porte de Madrid (L). Karsabruni became a pony again with Le Havre, a very good stallion for us. And she will go to Sea the Moon (Sea the Stars), a stallion is still accessible, with good stats. Like his father, Sea the Stars (Cape Cross), he can go to class without being late. We regularly see Sea the Moons running well at 2 years old. Moreover, he crosses very well with German families, like Karsabruni’s.

Exactly, Sea the Moon gave you a Pretty Tiger, probably the first horse of this level to inbreed with Monsun…

Pretty Tiger may well be the best horse we’ve produced in a while. He has several hybrids – and they are wanted – on Monsun (Königsstuhl) and Allegretta (Lombard) in particular. We reproduce this inbreeding on Monsun by sending Karlarina to Walker (Galileo), a remarkable stallion biography who stood on a stallion with exceptional success.

Back to Pretty Tiger, he’s an unruly horse but still runs once, wise at the end of 2 years old. Very early in training, he showed something.

We grieve the loss of his mother, Fast and Beautiful (Zamindar), and her pony by López de Vega (Shamardal). It is a Zamindar (Gone West), a remarkable mother who is always present in the genealogy.

We kept one of the girls from Fast and Pretty, Beautiful woman (Zoffany), a 2nd Place winner before racing to the List. She goes to New Bay (Dubawi), a nice and good horse, has good stats and is still accessible. This causes Zamindar to inbreed three times three times. It’s a bloodline that works well on domestic strains, like the blood of danehill (Danzig) for example. There is hope for Fast and Pretty’s family because of his son Gellibrand Point (Camelot) ran Futurity Stakes (Gr2) last year at the age of 2. Joseph O’Brien entrusted him with two classics. When he started, he was defeated by Atomic Jones (Wootton Bassett).

Tres Rock Glory will be insured by whom?

3 year old (L) Cup Winner, Very Rock Glory (Fastnet Rock) has a pony of Sea the Stars (Nose of the Cross). She goes to Teofilo (Galileo) and that makes three out of three inbreeding with Danehill. At 30,000 euros, Teofilo is a truly confirmed stallion who has succeeded us before. We sold Hameem (Teophilo) for 500,000 euros: she is listed in the colors of Cheikha Hissa Hamdan Al Maktoum, before the horses Gr1. She’s not part of Shadwell’s downsizing. It’s great for the family – it’s Very pleased (Monsun) – because Hameem rides with good stallions. The line has produced about 10 blacks since it arrived at Chevotel – even though it has been crossed with medium stallions, and it is growing successfully in Japan as well.

It was Ravi who gave us 11 winners and we still have her daughter at school so much love (Fastnet Rock). Three times shortlisted, she went to Sea the Stars.

How do you feel about the development of color grading in France?

The competitiveness debate has returned to center stage. But I think there is no great racing country in Europe without a great breeding. It is absolutely essential to support breeders, of all sizes and not just for the largest entities. In my opinion, reducing premiums is a dime saver, but harmful.

For the future of French motorsport, it is important that we find the successors Siyouni (Pivotal) and Wootton Bassett (Ifraaj). And that is through informing and incentivizing risk takers. We must celebrate the success of the stallions Guy Pariente or Nicolas de Chambure, for example. They only owe their success to themselves. But it turns out that when you have a good stallion, you give birth to many good horses and are more than 2 years old. What is valid for a breeding farm is also valid for a breeding country.

Not the king of stubbornness, a male like Siyouni gave us two of our best 2yos: A handsome boy (Siyouni), second in the Prix Thomas Bryon (Gr3), and Norma (Siyouni) very nice, but also very delicate.

With one exception, every horse that Chevotel sells wins. That’s really a goal: to produce better and healthier. Because health is a necessary factor to be able to accurately reveal the potential of each person.
