Minecraft: How to tame frogs

Frogs may be small, but they are the star of the show in the Minecraft Wild update. Since patch 1.19, players can breed and even tame frogs to raise them.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to make your own frogs in Minecraft, as well as how to raise them in case you want a whole bunch of little dancing friends.

Can you tame frogs in Minecraft?

Frogs, like turtles, cannot be tamed as animals as wolves or horses can. They can be lured, as well as bred, but currently cannot be tamed.

This means that if you intend to keep a frog as a pet, you will need to make sure it is kept in an enclosed area or tied to a pole, as otherwise it may wander on its own.

Frogs can be found in almost any biome in your Minecraft seed. The type of frog depends on whether the climate is warm, hot or cold.

  • Warm climates will have orange frogs.
  • Warm climates will have white frogs.
  • Cold climates will have green frogs.

How to attract frogs

To attract frogs in Minecraft you will need to use slime balls. They can be obtained by killing small slimes, usually found in swamp biomes or, rarely, deep in caves.

Just like attracting other animals, all you need to do is equip the decoy item and stay near the crowd you want to attract, and they will follow you.

However, the best option is to use leads. The sink is made using four pieces of wire, along with a slime ball, as shown below. The sink parts are reusable and you will have to use slime balls to attract the frogs.

Once you’ve made the leash, simply equip it and interact with the frog to keep it on the leash. Now you can drive the frog anywhere you want and even attach it to fence posts by interacting with them.

How to raise frogs

Raising frogs is like raising any other passive mob in Minecraft. Once you have two frogs close together, equip the slime ball and interact with each frog to put them in love mode.

After that, one of the frogs will become pregnant and immediately start looking for the nearest water source to lay eggs, just like turtles.

If you keep your frogs in an enclosed space, make sure you have water for them so that the pregnant frog can lay their eggs. After about ten minutes, two to six tadpoles hatch from the eggs and begin to swim in the water.

The tadpoles will eventually develop into frogs, and this development can be accelerated by feeding them balls of slime. Tadpoles cannot survive on land, so remember to keep them in the water. If you need to transport, you can use a bucket on the water to pick up the tadpoles, which you can then transport elsewhere.

The type of frog a tadpole grows up to depends on the biome it grew up in, not the type of frog its parent. Follow the instructions earlier in the article to keep your frogs in places where you’ll get the color you want.
